    Single-crystal growth and magnetic properties of the metallic molybdate pyrochlore Sm2Mo2O7

    We have successfully grown cm3-size single crystals of the metallic-ferromagnet Sm2Mo2O7 by the floating-zone method using an infrared-red image furnace. The growth difficulties and the remedies found using a 2-mirror image furnace are discussed. Magnetization studies along the three crystalline axes of the compound are presented and discussed based on our recent proposal of an ordered spin-ice ground state for this compoun

    Robust design is an activity of fundamental importance when designing large, complex, one-off engineering products. Work is described which is concerned with the application of the theory of design of experiments and stochastic optimization methods to explore and optimize at the concept design stage. The discussion begins with a description of state-of-the-art stochastic techniques and their application to robust design. The content then focuses on a generic methodology which is capable of manipulating design algorithms that can be used to describe a design concept.     Pure Anderson Motives and Abelian \tau-Sheaves

    Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In order to construct moduli spaces for pure t-motives the second author has previously introduced the concept of abelian \tau-sheaf. In this article we clarify the relation between pure t-motives and abelian \tau-sheaves. We obtain an equivalence of the respective quasi-isogeny categories. Furthermore, we develop the elementary theory of both structures regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and local shtukas.     Quality engineering of a traction alternator by robust design

    Robust design is an engineering methodology for improving productivity during research and development so that high-quality products can be developed and produced quickly and at low cost. A large electrical company was developing traction alternators for a diesel electrical engine. Customer requirement was to obtain very high efficiency which, in turn, was influenced by several design parameters. The usual approach of the 'design-build-test' cycle was considered time-consuming and costly; it used to take anywhere from 4 months to 1 year before finalizing the product design parameters as it involved physical assembly and also testing. Instead, the authors used Taguchi's parameter design approach. This approach took about 8 weeks to arrive at optimum design parameter values; clearly demonstrating the cutting edge of this methodology over the traditional design-build-test approach. The prototype built and tested accordingly gave satisfactory overall performance, meeting and even exceeding customer requirements

    Determination of the Joint Confidence Region of Optimal Operating Conditions in Robust Design by Bootstrap Technique

    Robust design has been widely recognized as a leading method in reducing variability and improving quality. Most of the engineering statistics literature mainly focuses on finding "point estimates" of the optimum operating conditions for robust design. Various procedures for calculating point estimates of the optimum operating conditions are considered. Although this point estimation procedure is important for continuous quality improvement, the immediate question is "how accurate are these optimum operating conditions?" The answer for this is to consider interval estimation for a single variable or joint confidence regions for multiple variables. In this paper, with the help of the bootstrap technique, we develop procedures for obtaining joint "confidence regions" for the optimum operating conditions. Two different procedures using Bonferroni and multivariate normal approximation are introduced.     Exogenously added naphthols induce three glucosyltransferases, and are accumulated as glucosides in tobacco cells

    Plants detoxify and accumulate several compounds as glucosides. In this work, detoxification of the exogenously added harmful compound naphthol in tobacco cells (Nicotiana tabacum L. Bright Yellow) was studied. When 250 μM of 1-naphthol or 2-naphthol was added to the tobacco cells, most of the naphthol was accumulated in the cell as glucosides and in further modified forms. The glucosylation activities against naphthols were increased in proportion to the concentration of naphthols in the culture medium. Addition of 1 mM naphthols caused cell death. Three glucosyltransferase genes, namely NtGT1a, NtGT1b and NtGT3 were isolated and characterized. The recombinant enzymes encoded by these genes showed glucosylation activity against naphthols and other phenolic compounds. It was also shown that these genes were induced following the addition of naphthols to the tobacco cells. These results suggest that naphthols are metabolized by glucosyltransferases whose production is inducible by naphthol itself.ArticlePlant Science. 164(2):231-240 (2003)journal articl

    The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com.Scopoletin is one of the phytoalexins in tobacco. Cells of the T-13 cell line (Nicotiana tabacum L. Bright Yellow) accumulate a large amount of scopoletin, also known as 7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin, as a glucoconjugate, scopolin, in vacuoles. We report here the molecular cloning of glucosyltransferases that can catalyze the glucosylation of many kinds of secondary metabolites including scopoletin. Two cDNAs encoding glucosyltransferase (NtGT1a and NtGT1b) were isolated from a cDNA library derived from the tobacco T-13 cell line by screening with heterologous cDNAs as a probe. The deduced amino-acid sequences of NtGT1a and NtGT1b exhibited 92% identity with each other, ≈ 20–50% identities with other reported glucosyltransferases. Heterologous expression of these genes in Escherichia coli showed that the recombinant enzymes had glucosylation activity against both flavonoids and coumarins. They also strongly reacted with 2-naphthol as a substrate. These recombinant enzymes can utilize UDP-glucose as the sugar donor, but they can also utilize UDP-xylose as a weak donor. RNA blot analysis showed that these genes are induced by salicylic acid and auxin, but the time course of the expression was different. This result is similar to the changes in scopoletin glucosylation activity in these tobacco cells after addition of these plant growth regulators. These results might suggest that one of the roles of the products of these genes is scopoletin glucosylation, in response to salicylic acid and/or auxin, together with the other glucosyltransferases in tobacco cells.ArticleEuropean Journal of Biochemistry. 268(14):4086-4094 (2001)journal articl

    Magneto-optics induced by the spin chirality in itinerant ferromagnet Nd2_2Mo2_2O7_7

    It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the spin chirality associated with a noncoplanar spin configuration produces a magneto-optical effect. Numerical study of the two-band Hubbard model on a triangle cluster shows that the optical Hall conductivity σxy(ω)\sigma_{xy}(\omega) is proportional to the spin chirality. The detailed comparative experiments on pyrochlore-type molybdates R2R_2Mo2_2O7_7 with R=R=Nd (Ising-like moments) and R=R=Gd (Heisenberg-like ones) clearly distinguishes the two mechanisms, i.e., spin chirality and spin-orbit interactions. It is concluded that for RR=Nd, σxy(ω)\sigma_{xy}(\omega) is dominated by the spin chirality for the dc (ω=0\omega=0) and the d→dd \to d incoherent intraband optical transitions between Mo atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. submitted to Phys.
